This is a picture of Saturn.

Discovery

Galileo(a great scientist of the time), first discovered Saturn in 1610. When he first discovered Saturn,(this is very strange!) he saw it through his low-powered telescope. He said the rings around Saturn, looked like the planet had "ears"! Although, 50 years later, an astronomer, with a far better telescope, found out that the "ears" around Saturn, was really a flat ring. (Job well done!) In 1970,(310 years later) people realized that Saturn was not the only planet that had a ring. Astronomers found out that Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter have them, too!

Appearance

You might think Saturn is just a yellow planet. But it is not. Saturn has colored spots(sort of like Jupiter's Big Red Spot). In the nighttime skies, you can see Saturn, (it is visble to the naked eye) even though, it is not as bright as Jupiter. You can tell it is a planet because,it does not "twinkle" as much as the stars. Pretty neat, huh?Saturn is not solid planet. Saturn is a planet made up of mostly gases. So, experts belive that it might be impossible to land a spacecraft; it is hard to land anything on Saturn because it is not solid.

Interesting Information

The second largest planet in our Solar System is Saturn! Saturn is named after the Roman god of farming. Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun. It is 890 million miles away from the Earth. Since it is so far away, it makes sense that it takes about 30 years to orbit. Every 10 hours and 14 minutes,it spins (Earth spins every 24 hours). Saturn's day is less than half of Earth's day. Saturn's rings are larger than any other planet's rings! Is that awesome, or what? Well, it is considered "or what"compared to some of these interesting facts!

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

* If Saturn was hollow, 750 Earths would fit inside!

*Saturn is made up of mostly gases!

*If you can find an ocean big enough, Saturn would float!

*On Saturn, you would weigh 15 pounds more than you do on Earth!

*The Voyager, an un-manned spaceship, traveled faster than a jet plane, took more than 3 years to reach Saturn!
