POLISH
TRADITIONS |
| Early in December, Polish women begin baking honey spice cakes called piernik. Formerly the recipes were well-guarded family secrets, which were given to young brides as a part of their dowry. The cake can be made in many shapes and forms. They were traditionally cooked in hard wood molds. In ancient times piernik was believed to have medicinal powers, and sweethearts exchanged the little cakes as tokens of love. |
