Paradise Called Texas |
| Chapter 1: One day Mina tells her family about a stranger in the village. The stranger was telling them of a paradise called Texas and there was a boat that was going to take them there if they signed the contract to go. They would also get a 320 acre piece of rich farmland. They had to pay 600 gulden to go. | |
| Chapter 2 : After Mina's family talked it over they decided to go. They started to pack and said good-bye to everyone and cried as they looked back at their home in Germany. | |
| Chapter 3: Mina and her parents are still in Germany. They said their very last good-bye to Opa and got all their luggage on to the boat and settled. That evening they docked and went wandering around the town of Bremen and saw many historical things. When they left Bremen they were sailing and docked again. They were going to be put on a different ship to get to Texas. | |
| Chapter 4: Mina woke up before dawn the next day and tried to persuade her parents to get up. She was in a hurry to watch the new ship sail away. A bad storm was present and the ship was swaying back and forth. Finally the storm was over and everyone's stuff was scattered. Luckily the storm didn't do too much damage, so the ship managed to start sailing to Galveston. | |
| Chapter 5: The Margaretha was almost like home to Mina. They had been sailing a long a time.One day the captain announced to his passengers that they were going to have a party on deck and they could bring any musical instruments, for they were near land. | |
| Chapter 6: The ship sailed closer to Galveston and when the ship docked everyone was helping each other to get off the ship. Afterwards Papa was persuaded to buy a gun to protect his family from the Indians. | |
| Chapter 7: For three days the steamer chugged along the Texas Coast until it reached Indian Point. While on the ship Mina asked Papa if she can shoot his new gun. On the other hand Mama was having second thoughts about Texas. | |
| Chapter 8: Mina was sad because Christmas wasn't going to be the same. She wasn't sure they were going to have a Tannenbaum, or presents. Mina and Anna went in search of some kind of tree and found a piece of driftwood and took it back to camp and put it right in the middle of camp. Everyone saw the tree and brought decorations and put them on the tree. Afterwards they sat around it and sang "Oh, Tannenbaum" and that night Anna had a baby sister. | |
| Chapter 9: On a cold January day a doctor came and brought wood, food, and assistance for anyone who needs a doctor. There were many sick people and Mama was one of them. Mama dies that night and is laid to rest and Mina puts a wooden dove on her coffin so she can fly to heaven. They had done all they could to help her. |
