| Chapter 1: Johnny's family arrived in Texas on a sunny day. First Johnny was excited about the new land. Johnny looked at the land and he thought it was interesting and great. He did not know if he was sick or full of excitement. |

| Chapter 2: Johnny's family slept at the same inn as their Cousin Ernst did. The people in the inn were very nice to Johnny's family. Papa had good news to tell his family. He bought a farm for them. It had an oxen, water, wagon, a cow, tools, and a house. They was so happy because it had every thing they dreamed of. |

| Chapter 3: Their new house had one room. Johnny's mother was worried about dangerous animals around their new home. Johnny loved to explore at the creek. Johnny did not tell his mom about all of his animal adventures because he knew she would be worried about their new home. |

| Chapter 4: Johnny and his father liked going hunting together. There were a lot of animals to hunt. Johnny learned how a mother quail protects her babies. Johnny saw an armadillo for the first time in his life. He learned something new every day. |

| Chapter 5: Johnny got bit by an ant for the first time in his life. He did not know how dangerous ants are. He tried many different ways to destroy the ant pile. None of the things he tried worked. He was amazed at how smart the ants were. He would get his mother's big wash tubs to see the ants go in the hole. |

| Chapter 6: Johnny learned how to shoot a gun for the first time. Johnny was so excited, but his father was worried. When he went home he took off his T-shirt and his mother saw a blue blister on his shoulder. Johnny didn't want his mother to worry about the shooting lesson. This is one more reason why Johnny's mother wants to go back home. |

| Chapter 7: Johnny's mother was concerned that there was no school. Papa was not concerned about school because he felt that Johnny will know useful things at home. Papa wants Johnny to learn English and Spanish. They played a game to learn the different languages. They picked grapes to make jelly. Johnny and his mother's hands got red and swollen. They thought they got poisoned from the grapes. They found out that it wasn't poisonous. This is one more thing about Texas they learned. |

| Chapter 8: Papa brought home a slave. Johnny and Mama were mad about having a slave. They knew freedom was special. Freedom was one of the reasons they came to Texas. The slave's name was Tobias and he was a nice hard- working man. He was so proud when Papa made him a free man. |

| Chapter 9: A cold nothern storm came through the farm. It brought cold weather and rain. Johnny was amazed! |
|
| Chapter 10: Mama went to Harrisburg to see the Murphys. Johnny and Papa went to see Mama on Christmas Eve. His two Christmas presents were a baby sister and a gun. Johnny had a great Christmas in Texas. He thought he wasn't going to get a gun after he saw his baby sister. Then he got his best gift; that was the gun. |

| Chapter 11: Johnny played with the boys from Harrisburg. They pretended that they were Mexicans and Texans. Papa told Johnny and Mama that he joined the Texas army. He knew it was right to fight for Texas freedom. Mama was sad he had to go. |
|
| Chapter 12: Mama said it was all right to shoot the gun, but Papa wasn't there. When Johnny came outside he saw a rattlesnake on his sister's bed. He got his gun and hoped that he would get the snake. Mama came running up. She saw the snake and grabbed the baby. He had killed the snake in the head. He had saved his sister. |

| Chapter 13: One night Mama heard a noise outside. She woke Johnny up. He got his gun and was quiet. Mama thought it was an Indian, so Johnny shot at the black stuff he saw. The next morning he found out it was Daisy's calf that he shot in the head. Johnny saw footprints of an Indian. So they thought the Indian opened the door and the calf went outside. |

| Chapter 14: Mama, Johnny, and baby Clara moved to San Antonio because they thought the soldiers were going to fight in their town. |
|
| Chapter 15: They went to a rich house. A
lady saw baby Clara and fell in love with her. She said she had lost her baby a few
months ago. The next day they asked if they could have baby Clara. Mama said
no. They loved baby Clara. |
|
| Chapter 16: Texas won the battle and everybody was happy. "Some people died but not a lot of people," says a man. The battle only lasted 18 minutes. |

| Chapter 17: Johnny and Mama heard that Johnny's Dad died. At first, Johnny did not believe it,but when he saw his mother cry he did too. |
|
| Chapter 18: Mama wants to go back to New Orleans, but Johnny doesn't. They got their treasure they had buried. Mama and Johnny miss Papa so much. |
|
| Chapter 19: Papa came back home one night. He said that he stopped by to see Cousin Ernst, who is getting married to a girl. Mama and Johnny were happy he was home. |
