Hej Texas, Goodbye Sweden

 

Chapter 1:  In chapter one,  Carl is coming home from school.   His father asks where he has been.  Carl answers him. Then Carl's father tells him he has to quit school and get a job at the spool factory because the farm doesn't grow enough food to support the family.

Chapter 2:   In chapter two, they are about to celebrate Walpurgis Night, A Swedish Celebration, to welcome spring.  On Walpurgis Night, Mr. Anderson talks about Texas  and how Texas needs workers to help plant crops and women are also needed to work and clean houses.   Carl wants to go to Texas to help his brother, who is already in Texas, plant crops.  So he talks to Mr. Anderson to ask if he can buy a ticket to Texas.

Chapter 3:  In chapter three, Mr. Anderson has left two tickets to Texas for Carl and his sister Christina.  Christina wants to go to Texas because her boyfriend is there.  In this chapter Midsummer Eve is going on.  It is a day where it is light all day and night.  This is also the chapter where Carl and Christina leave to go to Texas.

Chapter 4:   In chapter four, they arrive in New York City and have to go through a examination to see if they have any disease from another country.   They both didn't have any diseases, so they went through the gates.   When they got to the hotel where they were staying, they spent the night there and in the morning they got on a steamer to Galveston, Texas.

Chapter 5:  In chapter five,  they get to Galveston, Texas, were they stayed with a couple.   Once they go out on a beach and stay too long and were so red they looked liked lobsters!  Then they get on a train to Brushy, Texas, where Oscar lives, and when they get there they have to wait an hour or two at the train depot for Oscar to come.

Chapter 6:   In chapter six, when Oscar finally comes to pick them up at the train depot, they go to Oscar's house.  When they get there, Ingrid, Oscar's wife, and little Erik, Oscar's son, were waiting at the door for them.   Christina was to leave to go to Austin, Texas to work for a family.

Chapter 7:   In chapter seven,  Oscar and Carl have to go out and work in the fields.   Suddenly Carl heard a strange, buzzing sound behind him.  Looking more closely, Carl saw a dark coil on the ground.  Then a head emerged. "I see something strange Oscar," said Carl.  "It's a snake, Carl. Don't move," said Oscar.  "The snake has diamonds on its back," whispered Carl.  "Take a good aim and chop the snake," Oscar urged.  So Carl chopped the snake and killed it.

Chapter 8:   In chapter eight,  the family goes to church.  While Carl is there he meets Gusten Bergman and they become friends.   One day Carl and Gusten ride to see a cattle drive in town.   When they come back from town Gusten dares Carl to ride a wild stallion and Carl does.   When he's riding it, he falls off the horse and breaks his leg and he has to wear a split on his leg.

Chapter 9:   In chapter nine, Gusten and Carl go on a search for gold in this old cave.   Many people have tried to find gold in the cave but have failed so the boys try to find gold in the cave.   Soon they come running out, scared to death of the bats!

Chapter 10:   In chapter ten,  Carl has his first Thanksgiving in Texas.  They have turkey, mashed potatoes, beans, baked bread, smoked sausage, Swedish custard dessert, rice pudding, ginger cookies, and prune whip!  I bet it was really good!

Chapter 11:   In chapter eleven, Carl has his first Christmas in Texas.   He carves little animals for his friends and family.  He gets a warm cap from his sister, and a shirt from his sister-in-law.  Then they go to church to celebrate Christmas.

Chapter 12:   In chapter twelve, Oscar gets sick with a fever. Carl has to work on the farm by himself .   One day he has to go to the store by himself.   He is scared to go because he can't speak English very well.

Chapter 13:    In chapter thirteen,  Carl goes to the store by himself and has to talk to the storekeeper in English.  He talks to the storekeeper in English and does very well.  When he goes out of the store he meets another boy.   He talks to him in English and the boy becomes his friend.
