| Chapter 1: Anna Maria finds a snake and tells her brother to kill it. He kills it with a hoe and he was very scared. |

| Chapter 2 : Anna Maria and her family go to Tecla Rzeppa's (Babka) house on Sunday and she tells them about how hard the trip to Texas had been. |

| Chapter 3 : They go back to
Babka's house and she tells them the story of the ghost dog. Anna Maria gets very scared.
That night she hears clawing at the door. She thinks that it is the ghost dog but it is only their dogs. |

| Chapter 4 : Father Adolf and the Rzeppas come over. Father Adolf says he saw a headless and armless ghost walking around. That night Anna Maria is coming home from Phillip's (her big brother's) house when she sees a headless ghost, but it was only Father Adolf. |

| Chapter 5 : The Dziuks go to a wedding. Mother has to make bread. Anna Maria gets to dance with both her brothers and some other boys. |

| Chapter 6 : Phillip and Jacob ride horses to give Mr. Spincer a horse. On the way back they are chased by a phantom rider. He was about to snatch Jacob, when Jacob turned around to see that the rider had vanished. |

| Chapter 7 : Mama gets very sick. The doctor tells them that it is yellow fever and she dies from it. After the funeral the sun shines down on Anna Maria and she tells her mom she will take her place. |
