Lye Soap

Knowing how to make Lye Soap was a necessity for many American immigrants.  They used it for bathing, washing clothes, and washing dishes.  Below are directions for making the soap.

INGREDIENTS:

5 pounds of grease, strained through cloth to take out pieces of meat
1 can of lye dissolved in 1 quart of cold water
2 tablespoons of borax dissolved in 1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of ammonia
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon of salt

DIRECTIONS:

Have the grease just warm to the touch of your hand.  Stir into the grease slowly and easily the lukewarm lye.  Add borax, ammonia, sugar, and salt.  Stir the mixture until it is the consistency of thick honey.  Next, pour it into molds to harden into bars of soap.  If you don't have soap molds, the mixture may be poured into large deep (3 to 4 inches) containers, preferably crockery.  After it hardens it may be cut with a heavy butcher knife into bars of soap or even broken into usable-sized pieces of soap.
