Adaption of Woolly Mammoths

During the last Ice Age there were mammals called mammoths.  Fossils of these animals and frozen, mummified carcasses have been found.  In caves there are ancient drawings of mammoths.

Mammoths are extinct elephants.  They were adapted to cold and snowy weather.  They were plant eaters.  Their hair was very long to keep them warm.  They had long noses and tusks.  The tusks were actually teeth.  The teeth were used to dig in snow and ice for food, mating and for protection.  Their tusks could be as long as 13 feet.

Mammoths lived from two million years ago until about 9,000 years ago.  Dinosaurs were already extinct.   Mammoths lived all over the world.  Places like England/Europe, Siberia, Northern Eurasia, and North America.

The first Mammoths to have hairy coats lived in Europe.  Because it was so cold they had small ears.  Smaller than the elephants we see in zoos today.  Extra fat was stored for food.  They traveled in big groups.

There were Mammoth fossils that were found when miners were panning for gold in Alaska.  Perfect fossils have been found in Siberia and all over the United States.

The oldest Mammoth bones were found in Africa and they were about four million year's old.  People used to hunt them for food and carve drawings on cave walls in France telling stories about hunting Mammoths.

There was a Mammoth found in Siberia that was so perfect that it looked like it had only been dead for a few hours.  People finding tusks of Mammoths in Siberia sell them as ivory for money.

There is some misunderstanding about whether Woolly Mammoths were suited for cold.  There were some preserved Mammoths found in places like Liakhovs and Novo-Sibirsk.  The question about these herds is how they found enough food when the entire area was covered in ice approximately ten months out of the year.  Elephants eat a lot.  In fact they spend most of their day eating.  Mammoths would have eaten even more to get as big as they were.  There wouldn't be enough time in the day for Mammoths to eat that much.

Mammoths' tusks were curved down closer to  the ground which is different then elephants of today.  The Mammoth could use its tusks to dig through ice to get food.  Did Mammoths actually do this?  Yes they did.  Tusks that have been found have wear marks because of digging in the ice for food.

The Mammoths had a thick fur coat for warmth and they also had  fat underneath their skin and a big hump on the shoulders filled with extra fat.

All these things tell us the Woolly Mammoth was adapted to living in cold places.  As long as there was enough food, they could survive in the cold weather.
