Changes of the Railroad

During the years, railroads have made many changes since the first train made its first trip.  This first public journey was made by the Locomotion in 1825.  George Stephenson created the engine of the Locomotion.  France received it’s own railroad in 1829.  This railroad passes through the cities of Lyons and St. Etienne.  The Germans were first able to ride on a railroad in 1835.  In 1838, there were over 350 trains throughout the world.  1839 was the first year Amsterdam and Haarlem were joined by a Dutch railroad.  The United States had over 9,000 miles of track in 1850.  All of these first trains were steam engines.  The first major change for trains was when electric trains were invented.  In the late 19th century, railroads were one of the biggest sources of transportation.  Streetcars, which were invented in the early 20th century, were becoming more popular too.  Diesel powered trains were and still are very popular starting in the 1930’s.  Now there are monorails and subways, which many people use as a big source of transportation.  As you can see trains have changed so much during the years.
