Production Director and Publisher

In this phase, the art is checked for mistakes, and the production director estimates how much it will cost to make the book. He determines the printing schedule for the book and orders paper. The publishers are people who sell and publicize the book. Sometimes posters and special deliveries are made. Publicists send out lots of review copies of the books to people. Publishing is now a more diversified industry than it had been. Originally, the printers were the publishers. Today it is more common for printing and publishing to be separately owned businesses. Publishers are primarily editorial firms. They do not usually own printing presses, nor do they necessarily sell books directly to the public. The task of a publisher is to select, edit, and design a product and to arrange for printing and distribution. The publisher bears the full financial responsibility for the success or failure of the product whether it is a book, magazine, or other type of work.
