This is a puzzle where words that are guessed from their definitions, clues or hints are fit into a diagram of black and white squares. The letters fit into the white squares to form interlocking words that are horizontal and vertical. There are two sets of definitions or clues. One for the horizontal words and one for the vertical words. The black squares are used to separate words that are right next to each other.
In early version of the crossword first appeared in 19th century England. It was a children's game and was played by arranging a series of words so that the letters appeared the same both horizontally and vertically.
The modern crossword puzzle, however, was created in the United States. The very first crossword puzzle to appear in a newspaper was in December 1913 in the Sunday supplement to the New York World.
