It
was a hot and sticky day on the east coast. It was also my last day to
visit with my relatives and be a tourist. My sisters and brother were
going to a big park with my mom and cousins. They were going to have a
picnic and ride an old fashioned kid's train. My mom grew up in the
Maryland suburbs and used to ride this train when she was a kid. I really
wanted to go with them, but I had gone once before so I wanted to do something
special with my Aunt Nellie. We both hopped on the Metro and visited the
National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. My aunt took me all through the
gallery and showed me some of her favorite paintings. I was amazed at how
beautiful everything was ... I had never been to an art gallery before. My
favorite paintings (and also my aunt's favorite) was the Voyage of Life
series by Thomas Cole. These were four huge paintings about the size of a
wall that depicted the journey of a man's life from birth to death. Not
only did I enjoy looking at all of the beautiful artwork, but I learned a little
bit about each artist. Then, my Aunt Nellie treated me to a delicious
lunch at the National Art Gallery's restaurant. When we returned to her
house, my mom, brother & sisters, and cousins had all sorts of things to say
about their trip to the park .... but that is another story!
