Who was the first person to encourage you to write?

The first person who encouraged me to write was my grandfather's sister, my Great-aunt Naomi, who had no children and took a special interest in me and my dreams.

Which of your own books is your favorite?

My favorite of the books I've written is probably one called Rabble Starkey. But on other days, I give other answers to that question.

How long does it take you to complete a book?

It takes me about six months to write a book. But the thinking, which comes before the actual writing, takes much longer than that.

What do you like to write about most?

My favorite thing to write about is people: their feelings, and their relationships to one another.
