Reader’s Choice Award
The Young Reader’s Choice Award
was created in 1940 to encourage reading for enjoyment. It’s different from
awards like the Caldecott or Newbery, because only children get to vote on the
books! The Young Reader’s Choice Award (YRCA) is the oldest children’s choice
award in the United States and Canada. Nominations for the award can be given
from teachers, parents, librarians, children, and other adults. The YRCA board
reviews all the nominations and creates a ballot. All books that are nominated
for the YRCA must have an original United States or Canadian copyright that is
dated at least three years before the contest. Since 1991, two awards are given
each year; one for grades 4 through 8 (Youth) and the other for grades 9
through 12 (Senior). Voting takes place the first two weeks of March. Children
who have read at least two of the books in an age category can vote at schools
or public libraries. The YRCA is presented at the Annual Pacific Northwest
Library Association conference.
