Beverly Cleary
Biography  

Beverly Atlee Bunn was born on April 12, 1916 in McMinville, Oregon.

She spent her early years on her father's farm in Yamhill, but she did most of her growing up in Portland, Oregon. Finally she escaped the rainy climate--and her overprotective mother-- to sunny , Southern California.

She transferred to the University of California. There she met Clarence Cleary, her future husband, during her junior year.

Before she got married in 1940, she studied librarianship at the University of Washington in Seattle. She held the position of Children's Librarian in rural Yakima.

She published her first book, Henry Huggins, in 1950. Since then she has written over 30 books, selling over ten million copies, and winning many awards!!!

The Cleary's now live in Carmel, California. They have two children, twins, Marrienne Elizabeth and Malcolm James.
