The Black Pearl

List of Characters and a Description of Each:  Ramon (a boy who earns money buy hunting for pearls), Ramon's father (a great pearler who is lost forever in a shipwreck),  an Indian friend (who teaches Ramon how to dive for pearls), the Salzar (the only survivor of Ramon's father's shipwreck) and Manta Diablo (a giant manta ray who protects the black pearl).

Plot:  The Black Pearl is about a boy named Ramon who works with his father, a great pearler.  His job is to find the weight and value of the pearls his father comes home with.  An Indian friend teaches Ramon how to dive for pearls.  Then Ramon goes diving for the Great Black Pearl of Heaven!  When he finds it, he gives it to his father who places it at the Statue of Mary.  One stormy night, Ramon’s father goes out and never comes back.  His pearling fleet had sunk.  He and his crew, except for one, are drowned.  Taking over his father’s job, Ramon goes to the Statue of Mary.  Ramon steals the pearl and fearing the Manta Diablo, a giant Manta Ray that supposedly owns the Black Pearl, he rushes out to the boats to escape.  He rows far out into the sea.  The Salzar, the only member of the crew that survived, came rowing after him.  Knowing Ramon wants to throw the Pearl into the ocean, the Salzar takes over the boat and starts giving orders to Ramon.  He wants the pearl too! But when he drowns from being caught in his own harpoon line, Ramon knows the Manta Diablo is real and alive.  He knows this because he saw him with his own eyes, saw his opponent get killed by him, and this prompted him to throw back the Great Pearl of Heaven.

Did you enjoy this book?   This was one of the best books I ever read!  I really felt like I was a part of the book, because Scott O’Dell gave so much description.  My favorite part was when they were in the boat and the Salzar cut his leg to store the pearl.  When the Salzar was drowning in the sea, I felt happy for Ramon, and knew he was happy too.  I also felt bad for the Manta Diablo. He had so many harpoons stuck in his back! I loved this adventurous book.
