Avi was born in 1937, in Brooklyn, New
York.
He got the name of Avi by his twin sister
who called him that when they were about one.
When Avi was a kid he was shy, didn't play any sports, and loved to read.
He read picture books, chapter books, comic books, and listened to kids'
radio stations. In elementary
school he was great in science, but a lousy writer!
He had to go to a school that basically taught reading and writing,
unfortunately he still needed special tutoring.
He became a writer because writing was important to his family, so
therefore it was important to him. He
also wanted to prove that he could write, but it took two years before he had a
book published. He first started as
a playwright (Someone who writes plays). Then,
when he had kids, he started writing books for young people.
He still has trouble writing, but his family gives him support for his
efforts. Sometimes writing gets
boring for him and when he has a chance, Avi takes a break.
Avi's favorite book is The Next One.
He thinks that reading is the key to writing and that the more you read
the better your writing will be.
