Judy Blume
Biography
Judy Blume is a well-known author. She was born on February 12, 1938 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She went to public schools in Elizabeth and then went to New York University in 1961. Judy Blume says that she is a lot like one of the character’s family members in her book Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself. She also says that she based Sheila in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing on herself when she was young and Margaret in Are You There God? It's me, Margaret on herself when she was a teenager. She is married and has 3 kids. Judy Blume has 12 pets, 7 cats, 4 horses, and 1 dog.
Judy gets her ideas from memories of her life when she was a child. In each of her books, she writes about a day when something different happens. The one thing she hates most about writing books is “first drafts”. Judy says that it takes about 1 year to get a single book published because you have to write the story over and over again to make it just right, and then the book has to go through the process of getting published. Judy Blume also says that she hopes she is able to write more books for not only children, but for adults as well. One of the most recent adult books she has written is Summer Sisters. Some advice she would like to give young writers is that even though writing the books isn’t always fun, you should stick to it and you’ll feel proud of yourself when you finish.
When Judy was asked what her favorite book she has written was and who her favorite character was, she said that she didn’t have a favorite book or character. She was 27 years old when her first book was published and that book was The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo. So far in her writing career, Judy Blume has written 22 books. She was asked if anyone ever thought she was writing about real people in her books, and she answered yes.
