On June 24th the Wekiva Springs State Park
board of directors were given a tour of the Wekiwa Springs Park by Manager
John Fillyaw. After looking at park facilities and natural features, they
drove north on a via service road to a well-known sinkhole which was about
60 ft. deep.
The sinkhole was active again! What was so amazing is that the sides of
the sinkhole were so neatly sheared, it seemed to look as if they were
mechanically cut. Tree roots were exposed, old layers of sand, and a murky
little pool were at the bottom. An environmental consultant estimated that
it would take approximately 3,200 tons of dirt to fill the sinkhole for
good.
