Fighting for Equality:

"Jim Crow" Laws

In 1910, balcks were ensnared in a mortifying mode of entire segregation throughout the South. Through the "Jim Crow" laws (named after a balck muscian in a favorite song), blacks were mandated to use isolated facilities such as restrooms, water fountains, restuarants, waiting rooms, swimming pools, libraries, and bus seats.

The U.S. Supreme Court gave its approbation to "Jim Crow" segregation in the case of Plessy v.Ferguson in 1896. The Court said segregated conveniences were permissible as long as they were uniform. Many southern states never provided uniform facilities to balcks, but only separarte ones.
