| For many slaves the end of the Civil War brought a brief impression of freedom due to the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. In many Southern states, blacks were appointed to high positions and black lawmakers helped write new states laws. Between 1870 and 1876 , fourteen blacks held a position in the U.S. House of Representatives. Many felt that American society was living to iys establishing proprieties.
The promise of democracy was again destroyed. Many Southern whites were ascertained to keep blacks impoverished, uncultivated, and feeble. White politicians replied by using dishonesty and coercing to re-organizing their authority in the South. The reforms of Reconstruction began to disintegrate. |
