Tsunamis have caused problems throughout the world. They’ve destroyed piers, beaches, buildings, and people’s lives. One tsunami killed 159 people in Hawaii. The destruction in Hawaii cost millions of dollars. People in Hawaii are afraid of a tsunami because it is the most powerful disaster in the world. Since 1992, 2,000 lives have been shattered all over the world because of tsunamis. In Honshu, Japan, 28,000 lives and 170 miles of land were destroyed. On the coast of Chile, 330 - 2,000 lives were destroyed. Fifteen hours after Chile was destroyed, Hawaii had another 61 lives taken by the same tsunami. There, an estimated 24 million dollars was used to clean up the damage caused by the disastrous “harbor wave”.
In 1960, a tsunami formed by the coast of Chile. That tsunami killed more than 5,000 people, caused damage to the coast along the Pacific Ocean, as well as to property along the coast of Chile. Fourteen hours later, it hit Hawaii killing 61 people. The damage cost millions of dollars. It hit Japan nine hours after Hawaii. That time it killed 150 people. Tsunamis happen often. Warapu and Arop, New Guinea were demolished by a foot tall tsunami caused by an earthquake 15 miles away from the shore. In 1998, a tsunami happened at Papua, New Guinea and killed almost 3,000 people. In 1964, an earthquake made a 20-foot tall tsunami wave that killed 11 people. Then, it went down as far as Crescent City, California and killed 150 more people. In 1946, a tsunami came to Hawaii and Alaska from an earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. It killed 159 people in Hawaii and five people in Alaska. In 1983, a western Japanese tsunami, created by a nearby earthquake, killed 104 people.
