When de Gaulle was 19, he entered the Ecole Speciale Militaire of Saint
- Cyr, finishing as a second lieutenant. In the May
of 1940 ,during the German invasion of France he was in charge of the
4th Armored Division (During wars before he had moved
in the ranks) making him the youngest brigadier general of the French
Army . Then he became undersecretary of state for defense and war
under command of Premier on June 6 , but when Marshal Philippe P'etain
sought a treaty he fled London ad he announced himself in charge of a new
Free French movment . In England the Frenchman verified mischievous ally,unsudmissive
in his defense of French power and intrests . In1943 after the Allied landing
in North Africa , he transferred his headquarters to Algiers, where he
lead the French Committee of National Liberation . After the Normandy Invasion
the June of 1944 he demanded upon right of the the committee to direct
the civilian Administration of all free French territory . He went back
to Paris in triumph on August 26, finally setting himself as the symbol
of liberated France.
