In 2528 B.C. pyramids were made to protect the dead Pharaoh from tomb robbers, but by 1000 B.C. all the pyramids had been robbed. The first pyramid was built by Imhotep, with Dojser as the architect, in the year 2630 B.C. It rose six steps, which are called stages, so it is called a step pyramid. Imhotep made a building with stone that represented a stairway to Re, the sun god. Other pharaohs built step pyramids, but none lasted. Then King Sneferu made a smooth side pyramid. The biggest and best pyramid was in Giza. It is called the Great Pyramid, and it belonged to Khufu. Two of Khufu's sons, Kafra and Menkaure, also built pyramids, though their pyramids were not as great as Khufu's. Queens had different pyramids than the pharaohs (they were smaller). Most of the casing stones were taken off to decorate the city of Cairo. |
