Our group (in AGM) is doing a website about Every Day Stuff , and we
were wondering if you could answer a few of these questions:
1. How can drugs hurt someone's
body? Different drugs affect our bodies in different ways.
Some speed up our thinking; some slow down our reactions. All drugs do affect our bodies. Probably the greatest harm alcohol and other drugs cause is the way they change feelings and reactions. People who use
alcohol and other drugs to "have a good time" or because they are feeling low, don't learn good coping skills or
how to have a good time or to lift their spirits without an outside chemical. Coping skills are essential to being able to handle everyday life problems that get more difficult and complex as you grow older. Early use of drugs
keeps young people from learning these important skills.
2.What are some
examples of peer pressure? Adults
and kids both experience peer pressure. Adult peer pressure might
be something like feeling pressure to let your child watch R-rated movies
because other parents allow their children to do that, even though this
is against your parenting values. Kids feel pressure to wear certain
clothes to "fit in with" a particular group or they might feel pressured
to "go out with" someone just because "everyone is doing it," even if you
don't really want to go out with someone. Kids will pressure one
another to try smoking, drinking, and drugs, and even strong kids will
give in to the pressure to keep from being put down by the group.
Peer pressure is the pressure kids feel to do what ever their friends are
doing just because the friends are doing it and they don't want to feel
left out. Some peer pressure can be positive, like feeling pressure
to try out for something you might be good at but are afraid to try without
3. How can people
in our community help make it a safer place? People can come
together in their
neighborhoods and agree to work together, to come up with ideas together, and to share
with one another concerns they see in the neighborhood.
4.How can we prevent
drug abuse? Our community can prevent drug abuse by building
in lots of positive things for kids to be involved in, like working on
KidsView and other community service projects, together.
having fun activities planned, and by organizing neighborhoods to work
Adults can help prevent drug abuse by serving as mentors and being good role models for the kids they are around. Kids can prevent drug abuse by making a decision not to use, early on, and supporting their friends not to use.
5.What would you
tell someone if they were having trouble with a
bully? I would encourage all students who are having trouble with a bully to tell a trusted adult. If that adult doesn't do anything, tell another adult. Don't give up. Keep talking until someone does something.
Bullies need to be stopped for their good as well as for yours. If bullies are
not stopped when they are kids, they grow up to hurt other people as adults. Find someone who
will help you figure out a safety plan and stop the bully.
6. What is Forever Friends?
Forever Friends is a special group for girls in grades 5 through 12 that attend Pine Tree, Longview, or Spring Hill School districts. These girls are matched with caring, adult women who will meet with them once per week at school
and become an extra adult friend for them. The Forever Friends groups do fun activities like tie-dye T-shirts, talk about friendships, and even play games. Girls usually stay in Forever Friends until they graduate.
