Early Life

A low grunt is the sound of a newborn calf.  At birth, moose weigh between 13 lbs. and 36 lbs. The moose calf then gains weight very quickly. For a few days, the mother keeps the newborn just with her, away from other animals.  When they are only a few days old, moose can outrun humans and swim very well. Their legs are so long that they must kneel down to eat.  During their first year, bull (male) calves may develop small antlers.   All throughout their life, moose have very poor eyesight but their good sense of smell and hearing make up for this.
