Moose are the largest member of the deer family. A male moose (bull) is much larger than a female moose (cow).  A bull can weigh from 800 to 1200 pounds.  A cow weighs 600 to 800 pounds.  On average, both genders can be 5 to 6.5 feet tall. The largest known moose was seven feet tall at the shoulders. They have a short tail that can be 2.5 to 3.5 inches.  A moose can have long, dark brown to reddish brown to black color hair.  In winter, it may become grayish in color so the moose can hide better in the snow. Their hairs are hollow which help keep the moose warm and help them to float. They have high humped shoulders, huge muzzles, somewhat large ears and very long legs.  These animals are among the largest animals in the Northern Hemisphere.  A moose can have a large dewlap or a flap of loose skin that hangs under their throat.
