Antlers

Only bull moose have antlers. They can grow up to 5 feet or more in length. They may weigh as much as 50 to 60 pounds since they are made of solid bone, and be up to seven feet in diameter. Every year, the bull moose sheds its antlers and re-grows them each spring. This makes it easier for them to find food in the winter, and the new antlers grow back larger than the previous ones. The new antlers are usually tan to a brown velvet color. As they get older, the antlers harden and the velvet peels off, showing the white antler underneath. To help the shedding, the moose rubs its antlers against a tree.
