Mosi-oa-tunya is what the natives of southern Africa call the waterfall, Victoria Falls. The word means, “smoke that thunders.” It is called this for the thunderous spray clouds that are made when the water goes down the fall. There are many other native sayings used for Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls is classified as one the seven wonders of the natural world for its tremendous size and beauty.  Actually, the fall is so large that it has five different parts to it: Devil's Cataract, Cataract Island, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Eastern Cataract. (Victoria Falls is twice as large and twice as wide as Niagara Falls.) Foreigners first discovered Victoria Falls in November 17, 1855. They were David Livingstone and his crew. Victoria falls was named after the Queen of England in the late 1800s.

The climate there has been classified as sub-tropical, hot, and arid.  Whether the Falls are viewed during the hot season, rainy season, post rainy season, or cool dry season, they are quite amazing.

Victoria Falls is located in south central Africa on the border of Zambia, formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, and Zimbabwe, formerly known as Southern Rhodesia. As the Zambezi river matured, it broadened moving smoothly to the Indian Ocean. It is said that Victoria Falls was formed by erosion from the Zambezi river.

The Falls consist of many scientific views. The local archaeologists consider the Falls to be the “birthplace of mankind”.Today, paleo-ecologists are finding many discoveries unlocking mysteries to early man through the rocks and stones in Victoria Falls. For example, a very large percent of the glazed and paginated rocks are flakes, cores, have been linked to retouched tools made by prehistoric man. They have even found cleavers and axes.Sociologists recognize devices used to chop and cut called choppers. Also there have been discoveries of a six sided instrument used to bash things.

The mammals living near Victoria Falls are mainly in Zimbabwe because the Zambian side is for commercial use only. There are more than thirty species of mammals in the Falls area.Although humans outnumber any other mammal, herds of elephants and buffaloes roam there. Also, hippos can be seen in the river. The Victoria Falls area has an Animal Park to protect its animals from poachers. Recently, six new white rhinos that have been dehorned and moved into the park for protection. In addition, Zimbabwe has many different species of antelope like water buck, roan, kudu, bush buck, impala, eland, steenbok, common duiker, klipspringer, Sharpe’s grysbok, and sable. Also wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, warthog, baboons, vevert monkeys, and bush pigs inhabit the area.Occasionally, sightings of lion and leopard are noted while the cheetah and wild dog are rare.

Over four hundred different species of birds are spotted in the Victoria Falls area. Surprisingly, the most common is the ... domesticated CHICKEN! The birds are in three distinct areas, the gorges, riverine areas, and the woodland areas. The gorges have thirty-six species of birds of prey (sixteen have special protection). These include the fish eagle, rare taita falcon, and martial eagle. The riverine area is home to birds like the black cheeked lovebird, the African fin foot, Egyptian and Knobilled geese, and the common African Skimmer. All species are disappearing possibly because of tourists’ boats. Finally, the woodland areas are attracting many tourists, but few birds like the wobblers and water based birds. Most birds are disappearing due to human disturbance and bush clearance.

The reptiles are declining, but the fish population is booming with a total of eighty-four species. The closest you will get to an alligator is probably by ordering it off your restaurant menu or a petting zoo. The largest snake in the area is the python. Four fifths of the other snakes are non venomous. The river inhabits two tortoises (leopard and hinged), terrapins, lizards, agamas, skinks, chameleons, and amphisbaenidaes. Frogs and toads cannot be seen yet they can definitely be heard. They have unique names like the Band Rubber Frog, and Natal Puddle Frog.

Victoria Falls vegetation is reflected by the altitude, hot climate, humidity, and limited rainfall. The river has a fringe of riverine vegetation.Four hundred species have been discovered. The African Ebony is a tree that largely populates the area. Its straight trunk is black and grows hard skinned, plum like fruit, which are edible. There are also water berry trees with eucalyptus like flowers that bears a musikriri, which looks like a wooden, half peeled banana.

There are many interesting facts about Victoria Falls. The Fall is a breathtaking sight, but is becoming more and more crowded with many tourists. The local newspaper even made a comic about the tourists, “This is a seventh wonder of the world that will soon die because of you tourists!”  Because this is considered a natural wonder it would be sad to lose it to mankind's blindness.
