The first snowboard was made by Tom Sims in 1963, by modifying a skateboard to slide on snow. There were many improvements since then to make snowboarding more exciting, and also safer. People made metal edges on snowboards, and made the centers of the boards narrower for a turning advantage.
The first actual competitive snowboarding began in 1981. Snowboarding has been in the Winter X Games for 6 years, and is now the latest addition to the Winter Olympics 2002, for this year.
