The position of goalkeeping needs plenty of attention because it is a very important part of the game. The goalie is unique because it is the only position that is allowed to use their hands. The box that the goalie is allowed to use their hands is called the 18 yard box.
A lot of people say that when you catch the ball, you're supposed to shape your hands in a "W." We say that it's more like a diamond. Here is what we mean...
See how the first diagram has the fingertips pointing in, and the second diagram has the fingertips pointing out. The second one is wrong because the ball can easily slip through the space between the hands. Depending on how big your hands are, you might find it more comfortable to open your hands a little. Watch that the ball doesn't slip through your fingers though!
