Japan entered World War II with its leaders hoping that they would conquer the world. They joined forces with Germany and Italy to form the Axis powers, hoping to accomplish this goal. Japan was assigned to cause harm to the United States and to cause havoc in the Pacific. Japan started to try to accomplish power by taking over lands in the Pacific. The Japanese started with Manchuria, China, and French Indochina. Next, they went for the United States in a dangerous attempt at power. Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States, in 1941, called it, "A day that would live in infamy." World War II began December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The following morning President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. The Japanese had been planning the attack on the U.S. Pacific fleet for quite some time; taking over small islands in-route to Pearl Harbor. Between December 8, 1941 and September 2, 1945, many battles were fought by the United States, including the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Liberation of the Philippines, and Iwo Jima. The Doolittle Raid, one of the most famous battles, gave the U.S. renewed confidence. Back at home, millions of Americans worked in factories to help with War Production. The government was also secretly planning the Manhattan Project. And, unfortunately, Japanese-Americans were being taken to Relocation Centers. On August 6, 1945, the United States launched the first Atomic Bombs. Twenty-seven days later, on September 2, Japan Surrendered.
