Hitler had carefully planned to only fight one battle at a time instead of fighting in multiple battles at the same time. Hitler believed that fighting on both the eastern and western fronts at the same time was one of the reasons that Germany lost World War I. He wrote that Germany shouldn't become the whole worlds enemy. He wanted to fight his enemies one at a time, so that later he wouldn't have the problem of strong countries teaming up against Germany. In August of 1939, Germany agreed with Russia that they would not attack each other. When Germany was taking over other countries in the west Russia wouldn't interfere. Germany wasn't worried about France and Great Britain attacking them because in the early 1930’s, they hadn't been very aggressive in their responses to Hitler's violations of the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler thought that Poland was one of Germany's biggest enemies, so the German Army attacked them first on September 1, 1939. Hitler tried to get rid of Britain's allies, like France and Belgium, so that Britain would sign a peace agreement that would keep Britain from interfering with Germany's plans. Hitler also tried to convince Japan to cause trouble in the Pacific. He wanted to have the United States too caught up in stopping Japan, so that it was too busy to care what Germany was doing in Europe. Little did the Japanese know that Hitler was using them. Japan's goal in WWII was to cause the United States as much pain as possible. Japan didn't think the United States would want to fight. All that the Japanese people knew was that they would die for their emperor no matter what would happen. Japan wanted to gain more land and resources and to expand its empire. Japan joined the Axis powers in 1936, thinking that the Axis powers would rule the world together. The Axis powers were hoping to conquer the world, but they had no clue that the Allies would be strong enough to stop them. |
