| During a dry season, deer had become very thin and weak. He came upon possum who was strong and fat. Deer asked possum where he was able to find enough food to stay fat during these bad times. Possum told deer that he was living on persimmons from his tree and they were very good to eat. Deer asked possum how he gets persimmons when they grow so high in the tree? Possum said, " That is easy. I just run as hard as I can and butt the tree with my head so all of the ripe persimmons fall off. Then I eat until I am full. Deer thought that was easy and tried. So he ran to the top of a nearby hill, lowered his head, and ran full force at the tree. When he hit the tree, he was going so fast and hard that it broke all of his bones and he died. When possum saw this, he laughed so hard that he stretched his mouth so much, that it remains large even today.
