The Creation Story

A very, very long time ago, there were no people in the world. Sinawaf the Creator figured that he should start a project. He took a bag, some sticks, and his idea. He cut the sticks into tiny pieces, and put them in the bag.

Sinawaf had a brother. His name was Coyote. He wanted to know what was in the bag, but Sinawaf wouldn't let him look.

Finally, when Sinawaf went away, Coyote took a peek into Sinawaf's bag. People burst out of it. They started to speak different languages, and would scatter all over the world.

When Sinawaf got back he was very angry. He told Coyote that the people were supposed to be placed evenly in different places. Now there would be wars to fight over land.

Though Sinawaf loved his brother, he was so upset that he sent Coyote down to Earth. Coyote became the coyote, and will sometimes be heard calling to the sky that he wanted to come home.

When Sinawaf looked at his bag, he realized that there were some people that had stayed in the bag. He told them that they would be called the tribe Ute. They would be brave and they would be placed high in the mountains, close to Sinawaf. That is why the Utes lived high in the mountains of Utah and Colorado.
