Creation Myth
Back in time men emerged from a hole in the earth. There was a mockingbird at the entrance to the hole. He gave everyone a name and language. To one he would say, "You are going to be a Hopi and speak that language." Another he said, "You shall be an Apache and speak that tongue." And so it went for all who came through the hole, including the White People. Earth was still covered in darkness then, so the peoples went together and decided that they should change things. They made the sun and the moon and put them in the sky. With light and warmth things got easier for the people, so the chiefs of all races and all the tribes got together and decided to break up and go to different places. They decided to go eastward to where the sun rises and whoever got there first was to cause a shower of stars to fall from the sky, then everyone would see this and stop where they were. The Whites, always impatient, soon got tired. Their women rubbed flakes of skin from their bodies and made them into horses. Thus, mounted on these speedy animals, the Whites were the first to arrive in the east. A shower of stars fell to the ground, and all the people remained where they were at the time.
