Grandmother Spider Steals the Sun
As told by James Mooney

There was only blackness in the beginning and no one could see. People walked around blindly and kept bumping into each other. They decided they needed light.

Fox said he knew who had plenty of light, but they were on the other side of the world and too greedy to share it. Possum said he would be glad to help out and steal some. He decided he could hide the light in the bushy part of his tail. He went to the other side of the world and found the sun hanging in a tree and everything was lit up. He picked a tiny piece of light from the sun and tucked it into his tail. The sun was so hot it burned all the fur off. The people found out what Possum had done and took the light back. Ever since then, Possum's tail has been bald.

Buzzard decided to try and steal a piece of light and put it on his head. He flew to the other side of the world and got the sun into his claws. He put the sun on his head and it burned his head feathers off. The people took the sun away from him and Buzzard's head has been bald since then.

Then, Grandmother Spider said she would give it a try. She made a clay pot with real thick sides. Then, she made a web that reached to the other side of the world. None of the people saw her coming because she was so small. She quickly grabbed the sun, put it into the clay pot, and hurried back home on one of the strands of the web. Everyone was so happy because their world had light now.

Grandmother Spider brought the sun and fire to the Cherokee Indians, and also taught them the art of pottery making.
