Wool Dyer |
|
My name is Amanda. My job title is wool dyer. The tools I use are a pot over a fire and a big wooden fork. The materials I use are walnut shells, pokeweed berries and indigo plants, other plants, other nutshells and bright dyes from the stores. First, the boys build the fire. Then, I put the pot of water over the fire. Then I’ll find some walnut shells for brown, pokeweed berries for red or indigo plants for blue. I will cook them with water and then dip the wool into the dye. I put the wool in a basket to dry.
I like my job but there are some things I dislike about the job. I like this job because it is fun to make many different colors. In the cool weather, the fire can keep me warm. I dislike this job because in the summer I can get really hot. And also, the dye can discolor my hands or the fire can burn me.
In my job, I depend on other people and other people depend on me. I depend on the wool carder who gives the spinner the wool. The spinner spins the wool and the spinner gives the wool to me so I can dye the wool. The rug maker depends on me and the milliner depends on me because I have the colored wool they need. The rug maker needs wool to make the rugs and the milliner needs wool to make clothes.

To the right is the sign that hangs outside of my shop. The picture on the right shows wool that has been dyed with onion skins.
