Wool Carder

j0158187.gif (7648 bytes)

My name is Beth. I’m a wool carder. To card wool I use wire bristled cards. First I get all of the burrs out of the wool. Then I take the two cards and brush them together to make the wool soft and fluffy.

The feel of the wool is something I love. When people compliment me on my work, I feel important. Picking all of the burrs our hurts my hands. Standing up all day gets boring too.

When I am finished I give the carded wool to the spinner. She depends on me. I get the wool from the farmer so I depend on him. I also depend on the cabinetmaker for the wooden handles on the cards. I have a very important job.

To the left is the sign that hangs outside of my shop.  To the right is a picture of wool that has been carded and is ready to be spun into yarn.
