Sail Maker

My name is Remembrance and I am a sail maker. I use thread that has wax all over it. I also use wax for making curved or straight needles smooth so that they can go through the canvas easier. A palm is a leather strap that is used to help push the needles into the canvas. When old sails come in, if they are ripped, I mend the sails. If someone needs a new sail I make him or her a sail.

Mending a sail and making it beautiful again is one of my favorite things to do. I also like getting compliments fro making the sails so well. I don’t enjoy making the new sails because it takes a long time and is complicated. I don’t like to push against my palm because it hurts.

I depend on all different people. The blacksmith makes all of my needles. I also need the spinner and the weaver. The spinner would provide me thread. The weaver would make my canvas. If a canvas were ripped I would need the thread to mend the sails. The needles are to pierce through the canvas with the waxed thread so I can mend the sail. The ship builders and captains depend on me to make or repair sails.

This is the sign that hangs outside of my shop. The picture to the left shows the palm and the was that I use when making and repairing sails.
