Jobs Then, in 1917, Truman got his call to serve in the U.S. Army in World War I. So, like many other boys, Harry served in the war. He served from 1917 to 1919. World War I ended on November 11th, 1919. Harry was very glad when he got to return home. On December 8th, 1941, the U.S. entered World War II. After less than four months in office, Truman was faced with one of the most difficult and controversial decisions ever to confront a U.S. president: whether or not to drop the atomic bomb on Japan to end World War II. Harry S Truman ordered atomic bombs to be dropped only on cities who were devoted to war work. On August 6th, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. Ninety percent of the city was destroyed. Next, an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. More than 200,000 people were killed in that bombing; thousands more were wounded, yet the event led to surrender. The Americans decided to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan because they had had a battle on the island Iwo Jima (just south of Hiroshima, Japan) five months earlier. Then, on June 24th, 1950, the Korean War began. Harry had to make a lot of difficult decisions. In fact, he made some of his most difficult decisions while he was in office.
