Interview with Anne Butler

1. What crop was grown on this plantation?

Indigo was the first, and then cotton.

2. What were the cottages used for when the original family lived here? How many were built then?

The only one was the cook's cottage, but there were barns, chicken coops, workshop buildings, doghouses, etc.

3. How many children were there in the original family?

There were about nine children.

4. Besides growing a crop, was there a reason for building this plantation?

For a family home and for relatives to visit.

5. Today, are the cottages only used for people to stay in?

Yes, they are only used for people to stay in, but the cook's cottage is also a place to tour.

6. Is there any room that is still the exact same way as it first was?

The rooms are all still in the same use.

7. What did slavery have to do with this particular plantation?

There were only about 200 slaves at one time, probably because the people who lived here were Quakers, and Quakers usually didn't have many slaves if any. Another thing is,the slaves on this plantation must have been pretty well treated because they stayed after the Civil War.
