This is an interview with a person named Richard Stone, who went to Antarctica and is telling us about his excperience.

How long were you there? What job did you have there?

I was in Antarctica for 4 months. I flew down on a C130 Hercules plane with special skis for landing. I spent a few months on Ross Island, building prefab buildings. Then I went to Siple Station, an underground place in the middle of the continent.

What was difficult about living and working there?

It was not that difficult working there because I knew when I left it was going to be like it was. That was because I studied where I was going and researched what the conditions would be like. The homework I did helped me to prepare and become familiar. Therefore the whole experience was easier than if I had not learned about it in advance.

How was the weather? Was it unusual?

It was very cold on some days minus 80 with the windchill, working outside and other days it was 40 plus.

What were the most interesting animals and other things you saw there?

The most interesting animals were the penguins and the overall place itself. Antarctica is still today the most fascinating place I've ever been to... such desolation, isolation and purity. The most powerful force on earth is nature and we must all take steps to protect our natural environment.
