The
Game:
Game play begins when a player places a stone on the board, and doesn't end until both players pass. A player may pass at any time, but his or her opponent is not required to pass as well. In general, players pass when they cannot surround any more territory, or if they cannot capture an opponent's stone. Captures are made by surrounding an opponent's stone, or any string of connected stones. A stone is considered surrounded when it has no empty spaces connected by a line to it, called 'liberties' that don't have an opposing stone in them. A string of stones are surrounded if each of the stones have no liberties. A stone that only has one liberty left is said to be in "Atari" which means that it can be captured at any time. Once stones are captured, they are removed from the board and the player who captured them keeps them for scoring. After both players pass, they each get a point for every stone that they captured. They also get a point for each open space that is surrounded by pieces of their color. The player with the most points wins, and the game is over.
