Japanese Architecture
The Present

The Modern Era
In 1853 the isolationism of Japan was shattered and trade with the west was forcefully opened when US naval officer Matthew C. Perry arrived in Japan.
In 1868, during the Meiji Restoration, Japan opened its gates to the outside world and waves of western culture came crashing in. The technical innovations of the west were melded with the traditional style.
In the years between 1853 and now, known as the modern era, many architects made their mark on Japan: Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies de ver Roh, and many others influenced the new era of Japanese architects.
