A general practioner is also known as a doctor. A doctor has one of the most important careers. They help us feel better when we come to them when we are sick. They also help us take better care of ourselves by providing us with information on healthy foods to eat, exercise tips, and proper hygiene.
One-third of the doctors are ones that are family doctors, baby doctors, or doctors who know all about the inside of our bodies. When they need to, they can also refer us to other doctors, called specialists who may help us with a specific medical need.
Doctors held over 500,000 jobs in 1998. Around seven out of ten worked mostly in their offices. Others worked in hospitals, for the Federal Government, and even more are working as partners or in groups.

Becoming a doctor takes more training than any other job. It usually takes at least eleven years to become a doctor. Four of those years are spent in college, four years in medical school, and three years working in a hospital. There are 144 medical schools in the United States.
Due to expansion in the health care industry, the employment stance for physicians and surgeons will grow as fast as the national average for all occupations.
Because of expanding technology, there will be greater opportunities for doctors to specialize in working with conditions that were in one point in time diagnosed as untreatable.
The average salary for a doctor may range between $150,000 and $300,000. Surgeons make the most money because their jobs are very detailed and specialized.
Although, the salary you make depends on the number of years you have been working and where you work. It also depends on the number of hours you work and how good a doctor you are.
The largest amount of doctors can be found in the New England area of the United States. The smallest number of doctors can be found in the Southern and Midwest regions.
