HOWTO...

Mrs. Joe
Role:
As the wife of Joe Gargery and sister to Pip, Mrs. Joe is Pip's primary caregiver after their parents die.  Mrs. Joe is a controlling, overbearing person who beats both her husband and brother.  She doesn't think Pip appreciates everything she's done for him, and she makes his life miserable.

Motives:
Money and social status are always on the mind of Mrs. Joe.  Wealth drives Mrs. Joe to send Pip to Miss Havisham in the first place.  She believes Miss Havisham will generously reward Pip for his services, and the family will make a lot of money.  Mrs. Joe assumes that if she receives wealth and social status, she will be more than just the wife of a blacksmith.

Character Movie/Interview

Memorable Quotation:
(about Pip) "Drat that boy. What  a questioner he is.  Ask no questions, and you'll be told no lies."

Mrs. Joe's words describe how she feels towards Pip.  She considers him a  nuisance, a burden.  She considers her parents' death the event that changed her life.  It was then that Pip was forced upon her, and because of her little brother, she thinks she was forced to marry a lowly blacksmith when she knew she could do much better.  Pip was the destroyer of her dreams, so she seeks revenge to destroy his.
