Motives:
Jaggers is known for his soapy odor because he is always washing his hands. This is because Jaggers constantly feels the need to cleanse himself of the filth left over from his criminal clients. 

 

Jaggers expresses a hard and cold exterior that even frightens the convicts that he works for at times, but he has a hidden, more caring side that is rarely exposed.  His fatherly feelings for Pip are uncovered, and it is revealed that at one time, Jaggers assisted Miss Havisham while she attempted to gain custody and adopt Estella.  This is just a small portion of his history that readers are allowed to view. 

Unfortunately, he gives off a sense of what may be a shameful past.  Jaggers, whether dealing with his clients or his own past, is consistently affected by crime, guilt, and innocence.
