New Zealand

Penguin conservation organizations in New Zealand are actively trying to save endangered species in this remote nation. Some species are threatened by deforestation. New Zealand Penguins photo

New Zealand, a beautiful island nation, is home to many penguin species. Penguins that live here are suffering from encroachment of humans. The Little Blue, also called Fairy Penguin, lives in shrubs that are getting cut down. If the shrubs start to get replanted and more shrubs don't get cut down, then, with any luck, the Little Blue will have plenty of shrubs to live in.

New Zealand is also in need of more rookeries. A rookery is a vast place where penguins go to find mates. By saving rookeries penguins will have chicks which, in time, will increase the entire penguin population. Rookeries are also good for penguins because when it's not mating season, rookeries make good habitats for penguins.

Little Blues aren't the only type of penguin in New Zealand. Rockhoppers also live there. They are in need of help as well.
