Discovery

In 1498 Vasco da Gama was on an expedition from Europe to India. On his journey he discovered flightless birds swimming in freezing cold water. He discovered the Jackass or African Penguin.

Most people have misconceptions about penguins. When people think of penguins, they think of ice regions, but only two species live in Antarctica, the Adelie and Emperor Penguins.

A majority of penguins live in southern oceans. The most northern penguin is the Galapagos, which lives a few miles north of the equator. So next time you think of penguins, remember they live all around the world.
